weary as water

every time i blink i have a tiny dream

fleet foxes

IMAG0966
saw fleet foxes play at the alabama theater
thanks to the mean old boss that joel has
who wouldn’t give him the night off work

it was a pretty solid show
nothing groundbreaking or terribly inspired
although you know i am a sucker for harmony and melody
i couldn’t really tell you what any of the songs were
or what the lyrics were
they totally reminded me of this weird looking
red tide bioluminescence in san diego

the opener to the show was van dyke parks, who is 68 years old and still banging it out,
utah phillips on acid style,
if utah phillips were on acid and had a box set of 7inches to sell.

i’m glad i went.

Boston: What We Came For

Jeff Mangum was amazing live – I never expected to see him live, so it was an honest to god dream come true. He played a full set, came back out for one encore, and then even though we gave him another standing ovation the house lights came up and the background music came up over the PA. We kept clapping & yelling & stomping & banging, and about 8 minutes of this went by and he finally came back on stage to play one more song. (I mean, we waited 10 years to see him, what is 10 minutes of standing?)

There’s a nice writeup here.

And if you’d like to know what I felt like at 7:10pm on Saturday night, after waiting at the bus stop for over 45 minutes with no bus in sight and the start to the show 50 minutes away, well, it was pretty much like this, except with cursing.

Arcade Fire

The road trip to Atlanta to see Arcade Fire & Spoon was spur of the moment. I had taken off Thursday & Friday to see and recover from Lilith Fair in Birmingham, and after Lilith Fair was canceled I kept the days off. Then I read about a stolen bike recovery in nyc, and the post mentioned how awesome the Arcade Fire/Spoon show was, and I thought OH YEAH…I hadn’t gotten tickets when the tour was announced because of the Lilith Fair show. It took approximately 30 seconds to decide we needed to go.

Spoon put on a predictable set – nothing spectacular. But Arcade Fire were amazing…I know all the drum pounding and instrument theatrics looks overblown and cheesy, but it really makes for a great concert experience. The last thirty minutes of the AF set was especially phenomenal – the band was dripping sweat and the crowd was bouncing around and singing along and I was too.

After the show we went out for a burger, and about 4am I woke up with the worst case of food poisoning I’ve had in quite some time…I still haven’t fully recovered.
