Woke up early & checked out of Tokyo. The hotel had some fancypants single cup espresso maker in the lobby, and we each had a cup or two. Took the shinkansen to Hiroshima. Ate an orange for breakfast. It was simultaneously one of the worst and one of the best oranges I’ve ever eaten.
After a few hours, we arrived at Hiroshima & found the hostel without any trouble. We decided to take the ferry to Miyajima (the Shrine Island) before dark.

The deer are the first thing you notice when you get off the ferry. The deer roam freely on the island and harass the tourists for food and/or drink.
We made our way to the floating torii at the Itsukushima Shrine – the tide was partially out, so the water was not surrounding the shrine, but it still surrounded the torii. It was pretty neat to see the torii out in the middle of the water.

We paid our 500 yen and wandered around the Itsukushima Shrine. We never really figured out what was in these baskets…

Maybe I left a prayer of my own…

Finally we found a little path leading up to a pagoda. There were tons of cherry trees on the path…

We wandered into some of the little gift shops, and Dave got really excited by a vending machine with mountain dew in it (practically the ONLY vending machine I didn’t take a picture of, btw), and by the time we made it back to the ferry we were pretty hungry…
